Sacconi week at Kings Place 4-7 March
Following the hugely successful opening of Kings Place – London’s brand new concert hall and music centre – the Sacconi Quartet will present four days of concerts and events on 4th-7th March 2009. Taking the form of a mini-festival, the Quartet will present a varied and energetic week of creative performance. The overriding theme throughout the week is, naturally, chamber music, with the string quartet at its core.
Aspects of dance are celebrated on the first evening, 4th March, culminating in the première performance of a dance-choreography to Robin Holloway’s String Quartet No. 2, which we recently premiered across Europe. Haydn’s anniversary is also marked on this evening with a performance of his little-known String Quintet.
On Thursday we continue the Haydn festivities with a brand new play by musician-playwright Justin Pearson. Actor Roger Ringrose will play Haydn himself, reliving the many ups and downs of his time in 1790s London.
Friday will see the return to London of Acoustic Triangle and the Sacconi Strings’ highly acclaimed In Three Dimensions tour. Featuring renowned double bass player Malcolm Creese, and specially composed music by Gwilym Simcock and Tim Garland, we present a truly three-dimensional musical experience. This is the final performance of this unique nine-piece ensemble, and definitely not to be missed.
The final evening celebrates Mendelssohn’s anniversary with a performance of his ever popular Octet, written when the composer was just sixteen years old. For the late-night concert, the brilliant young Solstice Quartet will perform his A minor Quartet opus 13, written even earlier than the Octet!
Each evening ends with a late-night concert. These have an informal, sociable atmosphere, and will be the perfect opportunity to mix with the musicians and artists. We hope you will join us.
Kings Place has £9.50 tickets available online for all concerts, and we recommend you to book early to take advantage of the best prices. All of our pre-concert talks and late-night concerts are free. We hope you will be able to join us for four very special evenings of music and performance.
